Pp. ix, (iii), 425, 9 (ads); 15 vignettes (woodcuts) as chapter openers.  Publisher’s original brown cloth, spine is lettered in gilt, front cover with centrally-placed gilt scallop shell containing the title and with the author appearing in gilt below the shell, a gilt border with orate floral designs runs around the front board, beveled edges on front and rear boards, all page edges in gilt, gray clay-coated endpapers, sm 8vo.  This work consists of a series of 16 chapters, some of which were first published in magazines such as the Home Friend.  The first four chapters explore the island of Lundy. Lundy is the largest island in the Bristol Channel.  It lies 12 miles (19 km) off the coast of Devon, England (from Wiki).  Gosse was invited to visit Lundy in July 1852 where he spent time studying the natural history there.  Signature of Fred Seluett on the front free endpaper.
